  • Elemental Designs 13Kv.2 D4 Clearance

Elemental Designs just shot us a message that their 13Kv.2 D4 subwoofer is being offered on clearance and being discontinued. They are discontinuing the 4 ohm version as the 2 ohm version outsells the D4 4 to 1.It is a steal at $50.00 a subwoofer!

You can find all product information on this speaker here.

This is only offered in silver version. No black versions offered currently on this sale. First come first serve. When they are gone no further will be offered. So head on over and pickup a 12" subwoofer for less than a gas fill-up!

  • Shipping and Handling for Car Audio Nationals CD

The Car Audio Nationals CD's have been flying off the shelves, which has been awesome. (you can buy your copy here.) The bad news is that Shipping and Shipping Materials are killing any and all profits from the CD's.

It is costing about $2.00 or so per CD plus in postage and about .50 cents for each envelope. And these things have been flying off the shelves. So effective June 1st, I am going to start having to charge for shipping. It is something I had hoped to avoid, but at three bucks a CD give or take, it is costing an arm and a leg to ship these things around the country.

So effective June 1st, the cost of the CD's mailed to you will include 2.50 in shipping and handling to recoup some of the costs. I hope you understand. If you order one or more, feel free to email me for a combined shipping cost.

    Thanks!

  • Old School Hoarding - Show us your stockpile!

If you haven't figured out by now, I am a huge fan of Old School installs and equipment. I think some people are fans of old school equipment because of build quality, build location or some emotional connection you made to a piece of gear you lusted after as a kid.

Old school amplifiers are things I remember fondly. Ones that LOVED getting pounded by low ohm loads. And because IASCA had some really weird power classes, amplifiers were built to get you into various power classes. One of my favorite classes of amps were the so called cheater amps. There are a few that pop to mind. The Orion HCCA Series, the MPS Series from Phoenix Gold and the Precision Power ProMos 450.  (PPI also had smaller ones, including one I ran called a ProMos 12, which was 12 watts x 2 channels.)

Some many people and competitors are running fully active systems today. but with the limited number of channels to compete in power classes, that wasn't always an option. And with signal processors today support so many channels that is now an option.

Back when I first started looking at Car Audio, a three way setup was about as many channels as you could get unless you daisy chained two three ways together. While cleaning out the garage, I ran into a relic of a by gone error. How about a Phoenix Gold XVR? They were a sophisticated crossover system used to drive a front stage, center channel and sub all from a two channel amplifier.  While very rare to find now days, I managed to get two of them in my collection, one you see here that is a working copy and one that is still new in box, thanks to a friends and family warehouse sale @ PG a couple of years ago.

Do you have any old school pieces of gear you have been hoarding?

  • Tuner Evolution 2008 Pictures Posted!

image While I spent this past Saturday judging IASCA cars, Mike and Billie spend the day walking around the Tuner Evolution show and taking pictures for your enjoyment! The interior lightening was horrible, and we didn't bring the big flash, so I may be editing some of the pictures to make them slightly brighter.

Some of the highlights for me included:

Installations Unlimited Chrysler 300 that was featured in the Pioneer Build Off

    The Porsche 911

Porsche Cheyenne that was painted flat black

    The turbo Altima Coupe

A VERY Clean Early 80's BMW 3 Series

    A Rockford Fosgate Demo Scion

But there were some very cool cars for being this early in the show season.  If you are within a reasonable drive of York, PA, this show should make your "To Visit" list. In addition to the car show portion, there was some motorcycles doing some pretty sick riding. (Although, I personally would not do tricks with out a helmet or leathers..... But to each his own....)

My parting thought was that the Scion xB has become the new Honda Civic. The new Scion easily outnumbered Civic's here 2:1. While I know I am a little slow in this realization, it finally sunk in. <BG>

My hat is off to the Tuner Evolution team and for Greg Kitching from Town Sound for having us come up.

  • Great Albums for Testing Your Car's Sound Quality

There are a number of judging CD's published by Car Audio Sanctioning bodies, including the disks by IASCA, MECA and USACi. Most of them have some good tracks to test the dynamics, imaging and other important things. The good thing is that there are generally awesome liner notes attached to those CD's and you can listen to a ton of cars with the same CD, which helps train your ears and determine what you like and don't like.

The Bad News? If I hear Don Dorsey one more time from a car, (Click Here to Listen to the Exact Track...)I may be forced to break a speaker or two.  As somebody who likes to listen to music and gets tired of the same judging CD's I am always on the prowl for new listening materials. Last week I was at LiquidHiFi, which is the new home audio retailer started by long time IASCA Competitor Ron Buffington. I was there to listen to his new speaker lines and eat dinner with his wonderful family.

And there he introduced me to an album that made it's way into my listen to bag VERY quickly.  It from a band called "The Blind Boys of Alabama."  Evolving out of the Happyland Jubilee Singers, this traditional black gospel quartet was formed in 1937 at the Talladega Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Alabama.

Their first hit was "I Can See Everybody's Mother but Mine" in 1949. Which was way before I was born. :-)

This album was recorded in New Orleans for the first time in their almost 75 year history.. After performing together for over six decades, The Blind Boys of Alabama have enjoyed one of the more striking comebacks in recent memory. (Although this is the first time I have heard their album....)

Do you have a album you have recently discovered that you like listening to in your car? Overall, this album scores a spot in my car audio listening box and displaces the Red Hot Chili Peppers from the box.

  • A Monster Trademark

For my day job, I have undergone training on Trademarks and Intellectual Property. And we have some pretty strict rules about how we call our products, etc...  And as an employee, we have to be very careful so as not to invalidate the trademarks, some of which are brands worth billions of dollars. At the end of the day, Trademark law is designed to protect consumers by preventing companies from selling their products under false pretenses.

Monster Cable Products has taken this belief to a whole new level. They sued in federal court this week against the owners of Monster Mini Golf in Rancho Cordova along with the Rhode Island woman who sells Monster Mini Golf franchises. In its trademark infringement suit, Monster Cable claims the miniature golf courses "are likely to cause confusion" with Monster Cable's portfolio of trademarks, which include Monster Park in San Francisco.

Monster Cable has aggressively filed numerous lawsuits and trademark infringement claims against dozens of companies for using the word "monster" in names, products or services. Some of their targets have been:

For me this would be like my employer suing Pella Windows and Doors because they use the term Windows in their name. While I wouldn't take it as far as the owner of Monster Vintage did, rest assured that NO Monster Cable will cross into my house or cars. You could not buy their products or have a little bit of fun with them as the Owner of Blue Jean Cables did. What do you think? A bit aggressive on the trademark side?

  • Weekend Plans?

Car Audio Show Season is finally heating up here in the Mid-Atlantic. So this weekend I am headed to Tuner Evolution on Saturday, May 17th, 2008 to judge Sound Quality for the IASCA Portion of the show sponsored by Town Sound.  Greg Kitching from Town Sound has been a long time Car Audio fanatic, with his shop helping with cars including Keith Doney's Hyundai, Tom Shaw's Acura and his own still unfinished Scion.

Last year's show had some new cars to the car audio circuit including a Porsche 911 Turbo with JL Subwoofers located in the "hips" of the car. I never got a chance to listen to the car as I was doing install judging, but between the McIntosh Amps and the JL Subs in the Fenders, this was a pretty slick install.  And there were a ton of other cars there with killer installs and SQ. It is a nice show to be able to come out and walk in a day with the family.

They also had some of the craziest motorcycle stunt riders that I had ever seen there as a part of the show.

Check out pictures of the show from last year on the Tuner Evolution website, and if you want something fun to do on Saturday, we will be there all day! Look for a big goofy guy in a straw cowboy hat and RayBan Aviators. We will be taking some pictures on Saturday after judging for a quick glance of some of the cars here in the Mid Atlantic Area!

  • Old School Install - McIntosh All the Way!

I am a huge fan of the old school audio equipment, the gear from the “golden era” of car audio, a time when dozens of boutique manufactures were popping up everywhere. OK, who remembers names like Linear Power, Veritas, or USD Audio? Even some of the larger brands that are still around today had high-level brands and lines of their own: MTX’s Black Gold, Phoenix Gold’s MS Line, PPI’s Art Series and ProMos amps to name a few.

While some would say I am slightly obsessed with my PG MS Series amps, my personal obsessions don't even compare to one of Benchmark Audio's customers. (The Benchmark Audio in Upstate NY, not the one in Seattle or Chicago Area...) This customer walked-in with some gear he had collected over the past 10 years: vintage McIntosh speakers, subwoofers, amplifiers and some USD signal processors. So Tom (the lead installer) complimented the equipment with an old school-style install.

Next time I'm in NY visiting my folks, this Suburban will definitely be on my "Listen To" list. Check out a few snapshots for some true "old school" goodness!

  • You ever picked a car based upon the ease of stereo installation?

I was reading Andy Jone's Post on his Altima, and one of his comments regarding his factory kick panels really made me laugh: "Thank you Nissan for not putting a bunch of stupid wires down there." Sure enough, the Altima's kick panel was VERY bare, which makes upgrades like custom kick panels much easier to fabricate. (Mainly it made made me laugh because we had a long conversation about my kick panels, and I am pretty sure I stopped him from buying an A4.)

Compare that to the kick panel in my Audi A4 competition car…. I think Audi managed to terminate just about ever electrical function in the car right there in the driver's side kick panel.

    P3040092

As you can see, the finished result is clean and fits well, we had to do quite a bit of work to make that whole area accessible to my mechanic.

     P5040095

After the "Audi experience, I've actually taken my aftermarket audio intentions into consideration when searching out new cars. I know I’m not alone on this one. Have you ever made a vehicle decision based upon the ability to put your stereo in?
